Poi Dancing, Swimming and the Eternal Moment
We went down to the beach the other day with our poi to dance and play a bit. It was a perfect spring day, warm and full of promise. Our dreamlets couldn’t resist going for their first swim of the season…. fully dressed in jeans and sweats. I watched them while swinging my lovely blue sock poi and my heart filled with joy for them. I’m not sure they know how lucky they are yet. One day they will look back on their quiet and free childhood here on the island, unschooled and un-pressured to be anything but themselves, and understand the importance of just letting children be children. Most of us out there didn’t have that kind of freedom. I know I didn’t.

There have been times in our unschooling journey where I have had doubts. Not so much about unschooling as a lifestyle, but the fact that our island is extremely limited when it comes to things like soccer teams, art classes or whatever they might want to learn more about. Unschooling, after all, isn’t about pulling children out of society. It is about immersing them in the Life experience. The island is perfect for everything natural but our dreamlets are now 12 and they are looking toward the city. This is one of the reasons we have rented a house on the mainland halfway between the island and Thessaloniki and will be sharing our time both here on the island and there as a way to help them expand their experiences and open their choices.

There are always so many things to think about and contemplate. We can worry and stress any time we feel like it. It’s so easy to lose the moment and flip between the past and future. But that day, swinging my poi on the beach and feeling my dreamlets’ joy and the freedom surrounding them, I felt the eternal moment expanding around us……..

and when it was over, for moments like these never last with untrained minds, I went to the Kantina and ordered a salad for me and hotdogs for my girls and went home…

Be well….
