Running On Empty

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

I have been waiting to write this post in hopes that the inconvenience would be resolved before summer.  Today is a 3 day weekend…. a religious holiday (please don’t ask me which one… there’s soooo many I can hardly keep up) and the official-unnofficial opening season weekend.  What I was hoping would happen is that someone would come forward and rent out the gas station as it has closed down this past winter.  This has been a terrible problem for those living on the island, such as my mother, who has to drive back and forth to the village to buy groceries etc.  No gas station means no gas.  She runs out and has to pay over 20 euros on the ferry to take her car to the mainland so she can fill up on gas.  Can you believe that?  Gas is already so expensive here and now the locals are paying much more than necessary.  If you ask me a working gas station on an island should be a given.  If nobody will take it then the local government should take over and open it up.  Of course, this won’t happen.  So please make sure when you come to fill up on gas in Nea Roda.  If you have a full tank your stay here shouldn’t be a problem as the island is quite small and you just won’t get the mileage in.

Have a beautiful day!

A Most Excellent Breakfast

Friday, August 19th, 2011

wpid-IMG_0679-2011-08-19-07-53.jpg

Dreamlets and I went berry picking yesterday morning. These berries (we call them vatomoura) grow in wild lusciousness just about everywhere. We harvested about 1 kilo of these dark jewels (also harvesting many pricks and scratches from their protective thorns) and went home to have breakfast.

First I made almond milk. I took the long, hard way to get coconut cream which I like to add to my almond milk by whacking coconuts with a small hammer, opening the coconut, saving the milk for our smoothie, and juicing the coconut meat to get the thick coconut creme I wanted. I only had to juice half of 1 coconut to get enough creme for the almond milk, the rest I put through the blank plate of my Green Star Juicer and homogenized the rest of the coconuts and placed the flakes on a dehydrator tray to dry them. These I will use for coconut butter and coconut oil later on.

Back to the milk. Here’s my recipe.

Almond Milk

a handful of soaked almonds (about 1/2 cup)

coconut creme from 1/2 coconut (optional, but super good… you can also take chunks of coconut and put them right in the blender with the rest of the ingredients for the added coconut flavor but will have to strain the mixture afterwards)

unprocessed vanilla bean or powder to taste

a big dollop of honey or agave or a handful of pitted dates

a tablespoon of Irish Moss paste (which makes the milk creamier)

a teaspoon of powdered lecithin if you want even thicker, creamier milk (completely optional…. I prefer Irish moss because it has such a high nutritional value)

Place everything in the blender and blend. If you have a high speed blender you don’t have to strain the milk. Sometimes I strain it sometimes I don’t. It depends on my mood. You can strain the milk over a bowl in a nut milk bag or a regular strainer. If the holes are too big in the strainer you can place some cheese cloth over it or simply pour everything into the cheese cloth and strain it that way. I’ve even used cotton pillow cases.

Pour in glass jar and into the fridge. Almond sediment will settle to the bottom so you need to give it a shake before you drink or pour on your muesli.

Muesli recipe:

rolled oats (uncooked)

a handful of *preferably* soaked, sprouted and dried in dehydrator almonds chopped in the multi mixer. Walnuts and/or pecans would be nice in the mix too.

a handful of soaked, sprouted and dried sunflower seeds.

a handful of goji berries (or inca berries, or raisins, or anything you like)

a bit of agave or honey or chopped dates in the mix if you want a sweeter muesli.

Place ingredients in a bowl and mix. I make extra and store it in a large glass jar. If you do this please do NOT add sweetener unless using just dates.

I washed the berries and put berries and the muesli in a bowl then poured on the almond milk. I called my dreamlets to let them try the new concoction to see if they liked it. It was a hit!

wpid-IMG_0681-2011-08-19-07-53.jpg

We ate this all day long. A whole kilo (maybe more) of berries and muesli for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bedtime snack lol.

Going out right now to pick some more.

Have a beautiful day,

Be well…..

My new dehydrator!

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

There is great benefit in Patience. I have coveted the Excalibur dehydrator ever since I became raw 3 years ago. I was never quite able to get one. They are not easily found in Greece except at www.biosophy.gr where I get most of my exotic raw foods such as goji berries, maca, and raw chocolate powder and nibs (no, these items are hardly exotic in N. Europe and U.S. but to me they are, like drinking water from the faucet, great luxuries). Also, I made do with my oven which has a fan and starts at a low setting of 40c. With the door cracked open I was able to dehydrate plenty of food over the years.

However, without the right tools things are just harder. Just this spring I got my very first high speed blender… the Vitamix TNC… and immediately enjoyed the high level of quality raw foods this blender produced. I can’t imagine how I ever dealt with my old “regular” blender. Now it’s time for a dehydrator.

In my online search for the Excalibur I found the Sedona by Tribest (the same people who make the Green Star Juicers…. a most excellent juicer) instead. It has 9 trays and 2 fans which means I can close off 5 of the trays when I don’t have alot to dehydrate and just use one fan and 4 trays. I think that’s a great advantage. Also, there is a real glass door that opens just like an oven. The Excalibur’s door comes off completely… and you can’t see inside while dehydrating.

So Patience is, in fact, a good thing to have. I have now planned out my many new creations for when I get my new self-gift on Wednesday (maybe even Tuesday!!!). I have homemade coconut butter top of the list and oh so many raw cookies and chips and onion rings…..

Now if I could only find some kale…… (another impossible thing to find here, like young Thai coconuts).

Patience, Vida….. patience…..

Be well….

Making Pitas

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

wpid-kyrelenimakingpites-2011-06-29-08-25.jpg

Kyria Eleni is an amazing woman. She is from the Ipeiros mountain area. Papingo. She and her husband Kyrie Taki are Sarakatsani, an ancient and dwindling group of nomads, and she has come to stay with us for a few days. Their lives up in the mountains is quite different than ours here on the island. Taki spends the summers on top of the Pindos mountains in a small laminated iron shack just big enough for two sleeping cots and a few supplies. Sticky fly traps, always full, hang from the roof. The green mountain valleys are perfect food for their flock of sheep they tend to daily.

Taki makes the best cheese I have ever tasted.

Two or thee times a week Taki sends one of his sheep herders down the mountain to bring the fresh cheese to Eleni in Papingo. She packs up the horses with food and other supplies and sends them back up the mountain. In September, when the top of the mountain is getting too cold, they herd the sheep down the mountain and into the lower pastures. In the older days they would walk them to the valleys near Igoumenitsa (about 2 hours by car) but nowadays they load the sheep and horses up on a truck and drive them down.

Up in the village of Megalo (big) Papingo we stay at their most excellent Inn. Highly recommended for those wanting to see a different side of Greece (and a side I believe every traveler needs to experience). They are located at the end of the village on the road going to Mikro (little) Papingo. The views of Astraka and the Vikos Gorge take my breath away, even after all these years.

Everything you will find there is of the highest quality and with class and finesse. The food you’ll find at their restaurant is outstanding. One of our favorite things to eat there is pita. Any kind of pita will do because everything they put into their pitas is either pulled fresh that morning from their gardens or made with the cheese Ky. Taki sends down from the mountain tops. Unbeatable, fresh Sarakastaniki pita.

Kyria Eleni came here this past week to see us. She taught us how to make pitas…. the “real” thing… with the most basic ingredients. Flour and water. Everything she does is measured by experience…. take some flour and add water until you get a good consistency dough. You can also add a few dribbles of olive oil if you want. Then you roll out small amounts of dough into paper thin rounds….. add your filling and roll up (like a jelly roll type thing) and there you have it. It’s super easy, doesn’t shatter apart when you bite into it and is fresh for the next day too…..

Be well……

Goin’ to town in style….

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

wpid-IMG_0268-2011-06-19-14-57.jpg

Isn’t this hilarious?

My dreamlets and I were coming back to our car after a morning cafe in the nearby mountain village of Arnea when I saw this. The tractor is as old and beaten up as it’s opposite dressed in electric blue. I think it was the vast chasm between the two yet the distance between the actual vehicles were so close…. things like this intrigue me and make my mind move….

Be well….

Remembering to breathe…

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

wpid-IMG_0180-2011-06-7-17-14.jpg

Last year, above the balcony doors there was an air conditioning unit. This year we moved them to the left. It is easy enough to find someone to do such work for you but on the island it is near impossible to find someone who will leave the job in good condition. In this particular instance the guy moved the airconditioners and then used some kind of putty to fill up the holes. The problem is that he didn’t do a good job filling up the holes and he even left holes un-puttied. It looked awful and I didn’t know what to do about it. I was hoping the Captain (DH) would find the time to do his wonders and fix it, but there were more important things to do (like finish the yoga deck and new balconies) so he said we’d just have to leave it until next year.

No way.

I had to do something and this is what I came up with. I found blue and red paint and did a rag wash over the area. You can see where the patches of putty are as the blue paint stuck to those areas like glue. The with a mix of red and blue I thought I’d remind people of some very important things…. breathing came to mind first.

It happens that I am now staying in this same apartment (remember my home here is rented for the season) for a few days to welcome some very wonderful guests. Just an hour ago I was practicing yoga. All morning I had been stressed as I rushed to fix up a rental for Casey (a great guest of the past few years) and his family. When I finished I was tense, hot and irritated. I took a shower and went to my mat and began my practice….

tense…

I kept practicing, moving into Surya Namaskar……

still tense…. why couldn’t I relax???

….. downward dog……. my mind racing from thought to thought….. moving into plank… then down on the mat……

feeling agitated and wanting to quit the practice I brought my attention to my lower spine and brought the energy upward, curling my spine gently back into cobra and my eyes rested on the painting above the door….

b r e a t h e

lol…. of course….

my practice went much better afterwards…..

Just remember, no matter where you are, no matter what is happening in your life at this moment, it helps to be mindful of our breath…..

Be well….

When the TV is off

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

wpid-remnantsoffamilyondeck-2011-05-7-15-23.jpg

When the TV is off
miracles happen.

They happen all the time, really,
but who can see them when beer
and guts are flashing on the screen?

These chairs represent the remnants of a miracle,
a small one yet one so very great,
a time spent with people I love,
with no interruptions
or electro-magnetic noise.

Wrapped in blankets, we watched the stars wander westward
talking (imagine that) to each other and listening
to the ancient story of the sea
narrated on the rocks below.

We all live together
in one house,
yet someone else has taken charge
dropping ideas, good and bad (mostly bad),
into our supple minds,
filling us with fear and
feeding separation,

closing our eyes
to the miracles in
our own home.

I am no poet, but there was no better way for me to describe how beautiful it was to spend such a night with my family.

Do yourselves a huge favor and pull the plug. I’m throwing mine out completely.

In the old days, people used to gather on the verandas and share their moments with each other, singing songs for entertainment and looking into each others eyes….. how many of us do that today?

Be well….
